So Friday night was like any typical Friday night at Mardi Gras. Most of my friends had planned on going anyhow, but the benefit this time was that Trendkill was scheduled to appear along with Chief Bigway, featuring Joey Belladonna formerly of Anthrax.
As I prepared to leave for the club, I thought to myself how cool it was going to be to see Trendkill, and to see Joey Belladonna, well that was just an added bonus. I had no idea how cool it was actually going to be.
We got there, and Trendkill was on stage. These guys are the best Pantera tribute band I have ever encountered. There is so much energy in their playing, and they can really get the crowd going. This is nothing new for them. The last time I saw them was at Rocky Point Pub a few years ago. They did not disappoint me this time either, such a great show.
Then as Trendkill was clearing the stage in anticipation for Joey Belladonna and Chief Bigway to take control of it, there he was, standing right next to me. My friend Joe looks at me and says "Hey Joey is RIGHT THERE say hello!" And, although sometimes shy, I figured "Eh..Why not." And so I did. Let me tell you something...this guy is top notch. He was so nice, and so not clouded as many celebs are. I was impressed with his demeanor.
I decided to try to get a picture with him, I mean, how often are you standing in a local club next to and talking to Joey Belladonna? I cordially asked him if he would mind, and he was all for it. We snapped the first picture, and it came out way to dark, which Joey himself pointed out. He thought we should face the other way in hopes that the stage lights would assist in the lighting for the picture, and right he was. We snapped picture number two, and it came out pretty awesome. I said "have a great show and thanks for coming to RI. " He smiled and went off to get ready for his performance.
The performance was awesome. I particularly liked when they played "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath. It was undoubtedly the best performance of that song by someone other than Ozzy himself.
Joey played the drums with such passion, and engaged the crowd with that same passion he played and sang with. I am very happy I decided to go that night.
To be honest, I wasn't going to go this weekend, until I saw that Trendkill was playing on my facebook. I am so happy I did. Great people, and great performances of some of the best music created made for an awesome night at Mardi Gras. I hope they both come back again soon.
